Yay! Mom! |
Remember when you would get really really sick and your mom would smooth your hair out of your face, place a cool washcloth on your forehead, and bring you soup and crackers? Even though you felt like something from the night of the living dead, you still felt loved, comfortable, and safe? Remember the first time you got really really sick and your mom wasn't there? You felt miserable, alone, and, in some way, grown-up.
My mom came to visit me a couple weeks ago. The morning of the day she was getting in, I woke up with the flu. I threw up every hour at least. (Great weight loss program!) It was miserable. And then, mom walked in. I still felt miserable but now I also felt loved and safe. I could finally relax and not worry about being responsible. Mom was here. Anything that needed to happen could wait. Ah. :)
Despite that first night and morning that my mom was here, her visit was amazing! It was so great to see her! I didn't realize how much I missed having my family around. We had a wonderful time and got to see a lot of Jerusalem.
We went to the Garden Tomb for sunrise service on Easter Sunday, then we walked into the Old City for breakfast before going to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Monday, we walked the ramparts of the Old City and did some shopping. The next day, we rented a car and drove up to the Galilee. I didn't realize how much I miss driving! It was so relaxing (well - except when I was in cities...that was just nerve-racking!) and Chelsea was an amazing navigator. We drove up Mt. Tabor and then had dinner at a Bedouin styled restaurant before going to our hostel in Nazareth. The next morning, we visited the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth before going to Tiberius, Capernaum, Bethsaida, and a few other places and churches. We walked to the Mt. Arbel cliff where we had an amazing view of the Galilee area and where we watched the sunset. Back in Jerusalem on Thursday morning, we toured the Mount of Olives and saw Mary's Tomb, Church of All Nations with the Garden of Gethsemane, Dominus Flevit and it's beautiful view of the Old City, the slightly ominous Tomb of the Prophets, as well as the Pater Noster Church. We were also able to go into the Russian Church of Mary Magdalene where I got yelled at. As the nun insisted on yelling at me in Russian, we have no idea what it was about. She wouldn't even use hand signals. Oh well, the church was beautiful! That afternoon, I took Mom over to see my campus. We wandered around it for a while before going back downtown for some last minute shopping. Some of my friends came over that evening for dinner. Mom and I cooked them all tacos! They were a huge hit. :) The fried tortillas are definitely the key. The shuttle then picked Mom up at 3am. Crazy fast trip but so much fun! Mom, I miss you already and love you so much!! |
